Human Rights: Henriette Ngenga

As a young child, Henriette Ngenga knew only love and acceptance through her family and tight-knit community. Once she entered school, she quickly learned about the division of Rwandan citizens into two groups - Tutsi and Hutu - labels given by people of political power generations before her. The division of people in Rwanda, and the rise of political power by a Hutu majority, led to a mass genocide of over 1,000,000 Tutsi residents in 1994. A young, pregnant mother at the time, and labeled as a Tutsi, Henriette hid for days, and was brutally tortured, to protect her children.

Henriette now speaks throughout the country about her experience and human rights advocacy. Henriette’s key messages center on teaching children love and unity, that we are all responsible for one another, and the power of being Different Together.
