Fathers and Families Enjoying Father's Day at the Lerner

John Laidlaw usually spends Father's Day in his backyard, having a grillout with his wife, kids and grandkids.

This year, though, he was dressed in a suit, enjoying a full brunch with jazz music in the background.

John and Colleen Laidlaw of Elkhart were one of the several Elkhart families that spent Father's Day in one of the most celebrated buildings in Elkhart.

A Father's Day Jazz Brunch was in the Crystal Ballroom at the Lerner Theatre Sunday.

Kurt Janowsky, owner of the Matterhorn who caters the Crystal Ballroom, said that 350 people were expected to visit the brunch during the three-hour come-and-go time.

The Terry Lower Trio provided music, several buffet tables offered an ongoing supply of food and people were welcomed to look around the recently re-opened theater building.

Penny and Jerry Youngman of Elkhart said they were out of town when tickets to the Lerner's opening events went on sale. This was the one event that they were able to get tickets to when they returned.

After enjoying their meals under the seven chandeliers of the Crystal Ballroom, they were exploring the rest of the building, hoping to find a friend's artwork that they had heard was to be on display.

Some, like the Laidlaws, though, had seen much of the building already.

The Laidlaws' 42nd wedding anniversary is this week and along with Father's Day gave them extra reason to visit the Lerner.

The couple said they spent last Tuesday in Michigan, then, starting Thursday evening, have attended every public event at the Lerner Theatre so far.

"We've kind of been celebrating all week," Colleen said.
