Crowds gather at Lerner Theater for Elkhart Band's annual Christmas Concert

December 07, 2015

Elkhart’s Municipal Band played an array of Christmas-themed compositions and invited the audience to sing along in a concert that brought to close a weekend of holiday-themed activitiesin the city.

About 1,300 people gathered at the Lerner Theater for the Municipal Band’s annual Christmas Concert Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the concert, The Jubilee Ringers of Elkhart County played a few holiday favorites, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “The Twelve Days After Christmas.”

Elkhart’s band has been playing a Christmas concert every year since it was founded about 77 years ago, band director Dave Swihart said.

Last year the event brought about 1,200 people to the Lerner, and each year the band looks for different ways to inform music-lovers about its concerts.

“We’re always looking for ways to get the word out more and let more people know what we do,” Swihart said. “We provide really good family entertainment free of charge. Can’t beat the price.”

The band is sponsored and funded by the City of Elkhart and presents free concerts for the community, with about nine or 10 in the summer, and formal concerts at the theater in the winter and in spring.

The band’s next concert will be Feb. 14 and will feature music by English composer Gutav Holst. Swihart said the band’s goal is to fill the Lerner Theatre every time it has a concert.

“We’ve got some wonderful music that we’re going to prepare for the audience and for the community,” he said. “We want to encourage everyone to come out.”
