Air Force Band Honors Veterans

November 02, 2011

The United States Air Force Band of Flight will present its annual free concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Lerner Theatre.

Band of Flight Commander Maj. R. Michael Mench has directed the band for three-and-a-half years and has been part of the Air Force for 15 years.

He used to work as a high school band director before deciding that he wanted to combine his patriotic duty with his love for music.

Because the band is comprised of various ensembles, they are able to perform about 350 shows a year. Those other entities include a rock band, jazz band and woodwind quintet.

Its something I would never have been able to accomplish at this level as a high school band director, Mench said.

The Nov. 12 show at the Lerner will feature more than The Star Spangled Banner. Mench compared the groups style to the Boston Pops. He said the audience can expect to hear marches, light classics, Broadway songs and of course, traditional patriotic music.

Theres going to something there for everybody, he said.

Free tickets for the show are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at The Elkhart Truth, 421 S. Second St..

Doors open at 6 p.m. the night of the show. Ticket holders will be seated first and must be in their places by 6:45 p.m. Doors will then open to non-ticket holders.
